In Chinese meridian theory, there is one meridian that is not linked to a physical organ system - this meridian is the San Jiao meridian. This meridian runs from the ring finger, over the back of the hand, running up the back side or outside of the arm into the shoulder. From there it branches up and down through the body into several other organ systems - which we will look at below.
The San Jiao, Triple Burner or Triple Warmer meridian is thought to govern the organ systems responsible for water balance in the body. It is also linked to the hormone glands and some people believe it is most closely related to the thyroid gland. Sometimes this meridian is referred to as the meridian of hope and an imbalance can result in loneliness, despair, hopelessness and seclusion. Working with this meridian can bring balance to almost all of the meridians and is very effective in "resetting" the system. I often turn to this practice when I feel things are "off" - physically or emotionally - but cannot pinpoint exactly where or what it is. When we work with this meridian, we start in the higher meridians (top burner) representing intake including the Lung, Heart and Pericardium meridians. We then move to the middle burner which is assimilation or digestion including the Spleen, Stomach, Small and Large Intestines. Then we proceed to the lower burner which is elimination and includes Liver, Gallbladder, Kidney and Bladder meridians. Move slowly in this practice, take your time, really focus on your breath. Breathe into the spaces you make in the poses. Feel the tension, stress and your body's response to stress slipping off and away. Enjoy! Restorative yoga is an oft neglected practice. In our rush to get things done we imagine that lying around, supported by props is decadent and wasteful. So not true. Restorative yoga can be VERY helpful in therapeutically resetting your body back to balance. In this practice we are using Restorative yoga poses to open the hips and also to maintain good hip health.
What does that mean? Mobility. We hold so much tension - both physical and emotional - in our hips that a good supported yoga practice is necessary to release and open the entire hip complex. This practice does just that! We work our way around the ENTIRE hip area with lots of stretches and supported holds. I think you will be surprised at how much Restorative can do for you! If you want to spend more time in each pose, please do (I have ranges below). I have added an extra pose here to deepen the practice so enjoy! Millions of people suffer from headaches EVERY single day - some are tension headaches and many are caused by imbalances in the body. In Chinese Meridian Theory, headaches can occur due to imbalances in the Liver, Gallbladder OR Bladder meridians. In this practice we focus on these meridian lines to bring balance and hopefully prevent and relieve headaches as well as stretching the neck, shoulders and upper back to release tension! You can practice with me or take this on your own - taking your time and resting longer in poses where you feel you need it.

Even though we all wish we had hours for yoga practice, the reality is that most of us have less than 45 minutes and many have only 30 minutes! What if you could do a full Yin Yoga practice that would touch on ALL the largest connective tissue areas of the body AND balance all of the meridians? Here ya go! As always, you can take longer in each pose if you feel you need to or have the time and if you have a sleeping cat nearby - the practice is even sweeter! : ) Namaste, Aprille
